  2. leading figure in the Yugoslavian Communist
  3. Party (LCY) in the republic of Serbia, he
  4. became Serbian party chief and president in
  5. 1986 and campaigned to reintegrate Kosovo and
  6. Vojvodina provinces into `greater Serbia'. He
  7. was educated at Belgrade University and
  8. rapidly rose through the ranks of the LCY in
  9. his home republic of Serbia, helped by his
  10. close political and business links to Ivan
  11. Stambolic, his predecessor as local party
  12. leader. Milosevic won popular support within
  13. Serbia for his assertive nationalist stance,
  14. encouraging street demonstrations in favour
  15. of the reintegration of Kosovo and Vojvodina
  16. autonomous provinces into the Serbian
  17. republic.
